water injection systems  are used as part of the cooling system in a car. It is also known as anti-detonant injection due to the fact that it reduces detonation or engine knocking.

The function of water injection is to cool the fuel and air mixture before it reaches the combustion chamber. This allows for a greater octane rating and increased engine power. It achieves this by increasing the density of the mixture thus more fuel and air enter the chamber before it is ignited. The more of this mixture in the chamber the more explosive energy and the greater the power created by the engine.

The first use of such a system was in heavy bombing aircraft before the second world war. The increase in power was used when trying to take off and climb heavily whilst weighed down with heavy bombing equipment.

Water injection systems aren't found as standard on many cars. Chrysler and Saab have one of a few models but for the most part, it is something bought and added by the owner. This is often combined with a turbo system or supercharger to increase its effectiveness. This is with the scope of boosting the car's performance.

The use of these systems isn't generally used now as it increases fuel consumption and weight.
